The Court House, Wiltshire

A decorating project revisited; The Court House has a historic and personal history at Robert Kime. Working with the owners over time, the result is a layered and intricate interior, creating a home for its current owners and their young family.

A colourful and layered redecoration - this project in a historic Wiltshire house revisits the location of Robert Kime’s first decorating project. The origins of The Court House date back to the 13th Century and are said to be associated with John of Gaunt, son of King Edward III. The project was of interest, given the house's notable history. It is of personal interest too, as an opportunity to revisit the original Kime project and build a home for the new owners who care deeply about the property and storied interiors. Antiques blend with meaningful new layers and a few existing pieces from the original project — all redeployed for the new owners and their young family.

As an antiques dealer, Robert Kime didn't set out to be a decorator as well, but when his friend, the former owner of The Court House, asked for his help in "setting it up like yours", he obliged and Robert Kime's first decorating project was born. When the new owners bought the house they came to Robert Kime Ltd to seek guidance on how to update the house while maintaining its sensibility and nuance. Orlando’s plan was to use a light hand throughout to preserve the atmosphere of the house over time, whilst making alterations to the layouts and functionality of several rooms that would benefit from a deeper plan. A fabric-walled study and accompanying cloakroom were fashioned out of a former bedroom, whilst in the kitchen, features were detailed and a deep water well was exposed as a unique highlight. A thorough and thoughtful approach to the design of the house melded several existing pieces that the new owners bought from the estate with other finds from auction. Working with the owners, over time, the result is a layered and interesting interior that opens onto classic gardens and terraces that connect the indoors and out. The Court House holds a further history for Robert Kime Limited as well. Our ‘Tree of Life’ fabric, the first in the collection, was developed from an embroidered document textile given to Robert by the former owner. The house continues to give inspiration with our wallpaper ‘Sumer’ coming from one of its charming guest rooms and bathroom.
