A long, convergent terrace, on the edge of Calton Hill in Edinburgh was conceived in the 1820s by the architect William Playfair. Behind the classical rustication is an 1850s mansion interior with commanding proportions.

A townhouse with elaborate cornices and a commanding staircase bore evidence of a previous owner's additions - of plasterwork paneling, gilded mirrors and chimneypiece. A grand three-bay first floor drawing room gave way to simpler spaces for informal living - all expressing sympathy for the house in design and function.

A barrel-vaulted ceiling graces the distinguished entrance hall painted soft stone colours, opening onto a large ground-floor drawing room, whose size and grandeur is balanced with enough informality from a colourful Turkish carpet, bright Turkoman Stripe fabric on the sofa and Tulip Tree covered armchairs, to give comfort. The cornice is made sumptuous by gilding the classic egg-and-dart details. A Felletin tapestry is framed by 6 prints and a large Chinese lamp. In the French-style salon, furniture and decoration was selected as befitted the room's name and a raspberry carpet gives direction to the upholstery's colours.. Beautiful (and recycled from the doors of a conservatory) cupboard doors are used in the dining room, an  eighteenth-century Chinese wall panel hangs nearby.

A staircase that runs up through three floors required bold decoration, so a set of tapestries depicting the life of Alexander the Great was selected. The soffit recesses, as in other parts of the house, are painted a deeper colour than the walls - to create a striking effect. In the master bedroom, an elaborate carved part painted and part fabric covered pine tester bed is the main attraction, and another large tapestry appears on a soaring wall in the elegant master bath.
